Symposium- Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005.

Other than the discussion sessions, Streechetana also organized a public programme during this period.  We organized a symposium on the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, on 19th August 2006. Adv. T Sheela presented the paper on the topic.  She elaborated the salient points of the Act in her paper.

Dr. P.A Lalitha, Chairperson, Women’s Wing, Kerala Unit of Indian Medical Association and Prof. A. Radha G Nair, Principal, Government Law College, Calicut were the key speakers of the symposium.  Dr. Lalitha was of the view that the Act cannot be a panacea for this social evil.  She opined that the solution lies in strengthening the family bonds.

Prof. A. Radha G Nair pointed out that enacting laws did not help in the solution of the problem.  Instead transformation has been brought about in the society through the efforts of enlightened and empowered citizens.  She advocated the empowerment of the women for finding an everlasting solution.

Smt. Bindu Amat, Lecturer, Providence Women’s College, who presided over the symposium, held the view that domestic violence should not be seen as an issue between two individuals of a family.  It should be considered as a social menace and attended by social scientists and thinkers.  Around 60 women attended the programme.
