Seminar on Polygamy.

A seminar was held in Alkapuri, Calicut on March 7, 2009, to discuss the effect of Polygamy on Muslim women. Eminent speakers included Dr M.N. Karassery, Dr. M.G.S. Narayanan and Smt V.P. Suhara.

Dr. M.N Karassery opined that basically all religious texts were anti-women and seeks to spread male dominated values.  Polygamy originated under peculiar circumstances and Quran accepted Polygamy only with some limitations. He regretted that Muslim women do not enjoy equal inheritance rights as men do. Smt V.P. Suhara, NISSA president added that Muslim Personal Law was not in accordance with Shariat Law but was being used for continued male domination. Prof. M.G.S. Narayanan said that many Islamic countries like Iran and Iraq had banned polygamy but it has not been done in India yet. Only public awareness can bring about the needed changes. The function was presided by Radha Iyer, While Dr. K.S. Jayasree, General Secretary, introduced the subject. Smt K Preeta welcomed the gathering and Adv. T. Sheela offered the vote of thanks. The meeting also accorded a felicitation to Adv. V.M. Leelavati who became the first lady advocate to complete 50 years of meritorious service in the Calicut Bar.
